Ipswich has once again secured the prestigious title of the UK’s Most Depressing Town, according to a new nationwide survey conducted by the Institute of Mild Despair.

The study, which asked over 10,000 Britons to rank locations based on joylessness, grey skies, and the ratio of Greggs to smiles, found that Ipswich scored a record-breaking 97 out of 100 on the “Emotional Dampness Index.”

Residents have responded to the news with a mixture of pride and resignation. Local man Terry Hargreaves, 48, told The Daily Edition, “It’s not all bad here. We’ve got a Wetherspoons, two charity shops, and a roundabout that was once on the news. But aye, I can’t say I’ve smiled since 2003.”

Town officials have promised to “turn things around” by installing brighter streetlights and a mural of a vaguely cheerful duck near the train station. However, locals are sceptical. One passerby noted, “We had that art project last year where they painted bins yellow. Didn’t work. Just made the seagulls angrier.”

Tourism remains minimal, with most visitors describing their stay as “educational” or “a humbling reminder of mortality.” A recent travel blogger referred to Ipswich as “the perfect destination for anyone who’s ever looked at a puddle and thought: yes, that’s my vibe.”

Psychologists have begun studying the phenomenon, suggesting that Ipswich’s unique atmosphere may be self-perpetuating. Dr. Harriet Low explained, “When an area has this much beige concrete, people begin to absorb it emotionally. Eventually, the human spirit syncs to the rhythm of drizzle.”

Still, not everyone is downbeat. Local pub owner Sharon Dale insists there’s a quiet charm to the place. “We’ve got community spirit, and on Fridays, we sometimes get karaoke. Admittedly, most of the songs are ‘Creep’ by Radiohead, but it’s something.”

The mayor’s office has yet to release an official statement but is rumoured to be drafting a new town slogan: Ipswich: Lower Your Expectations, Not Your Standards.
