New Coffee That Tastes Like Regret Takes UK by Storm

A new coffee trend sweeping the UK has baristas baffled and customers strangely addicted. Marketed under the name BitterSoul, the drink claims to deliver the full emotional experience of a breakup, a grey Tuesday, and a missed bus all in one sip.

Developed by London-based start-up BrewPhilosophy, the coffee is made using over-roasted beans, Himalayan salt, and what the company describes as “a hint of melancholy.” Founder Toby Renshaw told The Daily Edition, “We wanted to capture the true British coffee experience — disappointment, introspection, and a faint taste of burnt toast.”

Early reviews have been polarising. Some customers praise the drink’s emotional depth, describing it as “existentially invigorating.” Others, however, have reported side effects such as spontaneous sighing, flashbacks to secondary school embarrassment, and an urge to text their ex.

“I’ve never tasted anything quite like it,” said commuter and coffee enthusiast Maria Long. “It’s awful, but in a really meaningful way. I cried twice and ordered another.”

Cafés across the country are struggling to keep up with demand, particularly in cities such as Manchester, Bristol, and Glasgow. One shop owner in Leeds admitted they had to close early after an entire queue began quietly humming Adele songs while waiting for their order.

Nutrition experts have raised mild concerns, noting that each cup contains the caffeine equivalent of three espressos and roughly 20% of a human’s recommended daily sorrow. Despite this, sales continue to climb, with BrewPhilosophy reporting over 200,000 cups sold in the first week.

When asked about future plans, Renshaw hinted at expanding the product line. “We’re working on a decaf version called Mild Disappointment and a limited edition espresso named The Sunday Fear. The goal is to make coffee emotional again.”

As one satisfied customer put it while staring into the middle distance, “Finally, a drink that tastes exactly how my life feels.”
